Bolton had been a part of the town of Hartford and was known as Hanover or Hartford Mountains until it was incorporated in 1720. At that time Bolton was bounded on the west by Hartford and Glastonbury, on the east by Tolland and Coventry, on the north by Windsor and on the south by Hebron. The section of Hartford that bordered on Bolton became a part of East Hartford in 1783, and, from that, it became a part of Manchester in 1823. In 1808 the northern part of Bolton became the town of Vernon. Today, Bolton is bounded by the towns of Manchester and Glastonbury on the west, Coventry on the east, Andover and Hebron on the south, and Vernon on the north.
