Mary J. Daniels, St. Joe County
Pioneer, 101 Years Old Aug. 31
VICKSBURG – Mrs. Mary Jane Daniels, a pioneer of St. Joseph County, will observe her 101st
birthday anniversary Tuesday at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. Robert Clementz, near
White Pigeon. Born in Cambridgeshire, England, she was a year old when her parents brought
her to this country, three months being required for the trip by sailing vessel.  They first settled
in Ohio, coming to Sturgis in a covered wagon when she was 10.
Mrs. Daniels was a resident of Three Rivers many years before coming here, after the death
of her husband, Warren.  In 1908, she resided with her son, Theodore, her only child, until his death in 1940.
Mrs. Daniels has many friends.  She is known throughout the county for her talent in making patchwork
quilts and intricate tatting.  She was forced to give up these hobbies some time ago, because of failing sight.
Until recently, she has helped with household tasks and in taking care of a great-grandson, now aged three.
She has five other great-grandchildren.  Her health is fairly good.
C.M. Daniels, Village president, is a nephew.
