I am 56 years of age; my post-office address is Marcellus, Michigan. I am a farmer. I served in Co. E. 42nd Mi., Infantry. I enlisted in August 1861, and was discharged June 28, 1865.
I have known Charles N. Nichols ever since I was a boy. We all lived in this same neighborhood and I married his sister August 13, 1865.
Oh yes, I saw Nichols a good many times in the Army. We were not brigaded together but were in the same Army. I will never forget about him being wounded in the Army at Stone River. It was a scalp wound and I went over where he was, as I knew him. He was bleeding pretty freely. Further than that I do not know of any disability he suffered from while he was in the Army.
When I first came home from the army, I lived in this town of Volina, with my sister, about five or six miles west of here. After I was married, I lived with my sister until spring and then we went to housekeeping about one and one half miles west of here, I lived there for one and one half years. And then we moved to Dowagiac, Mich. and stayed less than a year. Then we came back to Volina about six miles southwest of here and lived there two or three years. Then we moved to Fish Lake near Wakelee, and lived there a year. Then we moved into Marcellus Township, near Elijah Hike's. Nichols lived on Elijah Hike's farm all the time after the war, until he went up north to Fife Lake ...
