Jonathan Nichols, (1817 – 1873) married Persis Jane Watkins; he later married Sarah Minerva Wing. The graves of these individuals lie together in Rosehill Cemetery at Volinia Twp., Cass County, Michigan. The gravesites are marked by a single tombstone and the inscriptions read as follows: Jonathan Nichols died Dec. 1, 1873, Ag’d 56 y’rs; Persis J, wife of Jonathan Nichols, died Nov. 11, 1855, Ag’d 38 y’rs; Sarah M, wife of Jonathan Nichols, died Jan. 11, 1864, Ag’d 48 Y’rs.
Additional inscriptions on this same tombstone read Elliot, son of Jonathan Nichols, died Nov. 28, 1873, Ag’d 26 Y’rs.; Albert J, son of J & J.P. Nichols, died Apr 23, 1851, Ag’d 1 m, 15 D’s.
Three other Nichols tombstones lie to the immediate right of Jonathan’s marker. These tombstones pinpoint the gravesites of George A Nichols, 1843 - 1919; Mert J Nichols, 1849 - 1928 and Marshal 1852 - 1922. Together, the aforementioned graves occupy two lots #31-32, which are located in row #6 of the Rosehill Cemetery.
